Around this time of year, everyone starts running around their home cleaning every surface, nook, and cranny possible. While we certainly support brushing off all your knickknacks, we think there’s another part of your home you should give some special attention: your drains. If you want to avoid lingering odors and potential clogs, here are some ways you can spring clean the drains in your home.
To Get Rid of Smells
Does your bathroom sink emit a foul odor anytime you walk by it? We have a solution! Pour 1/2 cup of baking soda down your drain, and follow it up with 1/2 cup of white vinegar. Let that sit for about 30 minutes, then pour hot water down the drain to flush everything. (Please note we said hot, not boiling. Boiling water can damage your pipes.) Your drains should no longer smell!
To Get Rid of Clogs
If you notice your drain is gurgling a bit when water is flowing down it, you may have a small clog on your hands. There are a few ways you can handle this. You can try using a plunger to pull the clog out or use a drain snake to coax it out, or you can use a water safe cleaner to blow the clog through the pipe. If you still can’t get the clog out, give us a call — we’ll handle things from there.
To Prevent Future Clogs
Once your drains are clean and clear, you’ll want to take a few measures to make sure they stay that way. For starters, flush them with vinegar and baking soda every so often to break down any build up that could have formed inside your pipes. You should also always be using drain traps for your shower. One of the main reasons showers get clogged is because we let hair and soap scum run down them, only to clump up once it’s all in the pipe. The traps catch all that gunk before it can make it down the drain.
