During the hot Houma, Thibodaux, New Orleans summers, your air conditioner is essentially your best friend. That being the case, it would be completely understandable if you would be devastated if it broke down in the middle of the day. If you want to avoid any lack of cooling, it’s important to understand the common reasons your air conditioner breaks down so you can do your best to protect your system.
Restrictive Air Filter
Just swapping your common 1″ blue or white through away filter for a common brand 1″ pleated filter is not always a good idea. These modern 1″ pleated filters can be highly restrictive and cause more harm than good. Similar to how plaque in your arteries causes high blood pressure a restrictive filter may increase the pressure on your system cause reduced airflow, low efficiency, compressor failure, and more.
Duct Work Issues
Leaky, poorly designed, and/or damaged duct work can cause many comfort system issues. A restrictive duct system will cause similar issues to a restrictive filter and lead to similar performance and failures. Leaky duct work cost you money as well as poor comfort related to air balance issues, poor indoor air quality, dust, and other issues.
Indoor Evaporator Coil Issues
Remember how we said a dirty filter could cause bigger problems? Well, one of those problems is that a lack of proper airflow can cause your evaporator coils to freeze. If this occurs, your air conditioner well either pump out warm air or no air at all.
